July 7, 2009 - IN Space-Purdue Awarded MDA Phase II STTR on Advanced Solid Rocket PropellantsIN Space and Purdue University have been awarded a Phase II Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract from the Missile Defense Agency to further develop a new binder for composite solid rocket propellants. The binder being developed is an energetic, high-strength material with a theoretical performance equal to hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) when combined with common solid rocket propellants but achieved five times HTPB’s burn rate in ballistic test firings and improved tensile strength in mechanical tests. Additionally, the new propellant also exhibiting reduced sensitivity to certain stimuli of interest for improved munition safety in subscale experiments. Through this two-year Phase II research and development project, the IN Space-Purdue team will continue to advance the binder and propellant formulations, seeking to enhance their propulsive, mechanical, and insensitive munition properties. |
June 18, 2009 - IN Space Awarded New Phase I SBIR from USAFIN Space, LLC has been awarded a new Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract with the U.S. Air Force under the 2008.3 solicitation. In this new project, IN Space will work to improve the methodology used to predict the combustion stability of oxidizer-rich staged combustion (ORSC) liquid rocket engines by integrating high-fidelity CFD, state-of-the-art engineering analysis, and sub-scale experimental data. Our emphasis in this work will be on the unsteady mixing of asymetric injector elements due to an oscillating velocity field inside the combustor. This research is expected to permit significant physical insight into the dynamic interactions between acoustic waves and the injector flow field, establish methods for reducing high-fidelity simulations into simpler combustion response functions, and provide a mechanistic basis for the velocity-coupling correlation in predicting stability. We are excited to continue our efforts in assisting the USAF with the mitigation of performance-robbing, potentially destructive combustion instabilities for the next generation of booster engines. |
